Educational Choices, Lifestyles, and Finances

Traditional public school systems do not have a lock on the educational market. Affording college tuition or even high school tuition can be a factor in whether to choose public school or a private school, as private schools are far more expensive. However, there are so many grants and loans out there, that you shouldn’t let your dreams be thwarted over a lack of college funds. In addition, you may find many more choices for schooling that can fit into your budget without even having to take out loans.

Take a Look at Alternative Choices First

If you can’t afford a 4-year program, look for 2-year or certificate program to complete. Get skills that can put you in demand in the job market in your area. By targeting jobs that are hiring or due to expand in hiring, you have a better chance of putting your education to use. Think of going to a vocational training program or taking online classes. If you are in high school, you have the option to be home schooled, go to a magnet school, or a private school. Don’t assume that your only career path is a traditional 4-year college degree, unless that is something you’ve always dreamed of doing.

Find the Funding

Next, once you’ve narrowed down your choices, according to your lifestyles and dream, attempt to find your financing sources. You should do this early for college, like as soon as you enter your senior year in high school. Many programs do have funding, but application to get it is usually a lengthy process and needs to be completed by specific deadlines. Think ahead and look for funding at least one year, if not more, before you try to enter a program in any school. If the financing is first come/first served and you apply early, you will be the first in line if you qualify.

Making drinking age 18 not likely to curb college binge drinking

David Goodhue – AHN News Reporter

LA, United States (AHN) – Lowering the legal drinking age from 21 years old would likely do little to curb binge drinking, according to a new study.

The Louisiana State University School of Public Health report is in response to a movement by a group of college presidents and chancellors to reconsider lowering the legal drinking age. The movement named itself the Amethyst Initiative.

They argued that young people may learn more responsible drinking behaviors if they were allowed to legally drink in bars and restaurants by the age of 18.

This may lead to less binge drinking on college campuses, the group argues.

But Dr. Richard A. Scribner and colleagues at BioMedware Corporation in Ann Arbor, MI, used a mathematical model to estimate the impact of lowering the drinking age on campus binge drinking.

The model was based on survey data from students at 32 colleges nationwide. The model aimed to evaluate what the researchers called the “misinterpretation effect” emphasized by the Amethyst Initiative; the idea that underage students widely viewed “normal” drinking levels to be higher than they usually are, and that students would adjust their own habits if they were surrounded by social drinkers rather than binge drinkers at parties.

The researchers found that lowering the drinking age would have little effect in most schools. But the institutions that it would most impact would be those with the poorest enforcement of underage drinking laws.

Otherwise, lowering the drinking age would probably result in more binge drinking, the researchers said.

A report on the study is published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.

Obama Cautions U.S. About Global Educational Race

Tejinder Singh – AHN News Correspondent

Washington, D.C., United States (AHN) – President Barack Obama on Wednesday cited an “educational arms race” with growing nations such as China and India, warning that America cannot lose sight of this if American economy wants to rejuvenate itself.

“There’s an educational arms race taking place around the world right now — from China to Germany, to India to South Korea,” warned Obama in remarks at the Rose Garden in the White House.

“Cutting back on education would amount to unilateral disarmament. We can’t afford to do that. The nation that educates its children the best will be the nation that leads the global economy in the 21st century,” he added.

Outlining all the proposals his administration has been putting in place, Obama stressed, “American Opportunity Tax Credit — a college tuition tax credit worth up to $2,500 a year,” for middle-class families.

Obama called upon “Congress to make this tax credit permanent so it’s worth up to $10,000 for four years of college.”

In the presence of some of the college students and their parents, whom he had met earlier, Obama told his audience, “We’ve got to make sure that in good times or bad, our families can invest in their children’s future and in the future of our country.”

Citing from a report from the Treasury Department, Obama said, “Over our first year in office, we’ve increased tax cuts for higher education by over 90%, and we’re helping the dream of a college degree — putting that dream within reach of more than 12 million students from working families.”

Obama criticized the Republican moves for budge cuts “on education by 20%,” saying, “That means reducing financial aid for eight million students and leaving our community colleges without the resources they need to prepare our students for the jobs of the future.”

“Nothing would be more shortsighted,” observed the president.
